1] Flood Situation Worsens in Khaliajuri

The flood situation in Khaliajuri Upazila of Netrokona has taken a serious turn as continuous rainfall and the rising water levels of nearby rivers have submerged vast areas. According to local administration sources, nearly 15,000 people have been marooned, while approximately 20,000 hectares of Boro cropland have been severely damaged, causing significant losses to farmers.
The worst-affected areas include Baghatia, Gondamara, Nagor Ballobpur, and Jagannathpur Haor, where thousands of hectares of cultivated land remain under water. In addition, a 10-kilometre stretch of the Jatrabari flood protection embankment has been washed away, worsening the flood situation and allowing water to enter surrounding villages.
Officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board reported that the water levels of the Kongsha, Dhonu, and Ubdakhali rivers have risen sharply due to heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of further flooding in low-lying areas.
The humanitarian situation is becoming increasingly alarming. Acute shortages of safe drinking water, food, and essential commodities have created immense suffering among the flood victims. Furthermore, outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and dysentery have been reported in several shelters and affected villages. Although some local NGOs and charitable organizations have initiated limited relief operations, government assistance has yet to reach many remote areas, leaving thousands of families without adequate support.
Medical experts have emphasized the urgent need for oral saline, medicines, and healthcare services to prevent the spread of disease. They have warned that if relief materials, medical supplies, and clean drinking water are not distributed immediately, the affected areas may face a serious public health crisis. Medical experts have warned that prolonged consumption of adulterated food may lead to severe health complications, including food poisoning, liver and kidney damage, heart disease, hormonal disorders, and even cancer. Children, pregnant women, and elderly people are particularly vulnerable to these harmful effects. Doctors have also reported an increase in digestive disorders and other illnesses linked to contaminated food.

5] Dengue Outbreak Worsens in Dhaka City

The recent outbreak of dengue fever in Dhaka city has become a major public health concern, with hospitals witnessing a sharp increase in the number of patients. The mosquito-borne disease has spread rapidly across different parts of the capital, creating fear and anxiety among city residents. Health experts have warned that the situation may deteriorate further if immediate preventive measures are not taken.
According to officials of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), hundreds of new dengue cases have been reported in the past few weeks, while several patients have died from complications related to the disease. Public and private hospitals are struggling to accommodate the growing number of patients, and many healthcare facilities have increased the number of beds dedicated to dengue treatment.
Medical specialists have identified the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes in stagnant water as the principal cause of the outbreak. Continuous rainfall, poor drainage systems, waterlogging, and inadequate waste management have created favourable conditions for mosquito breeding. Many residential areas, construction sites, rooftops, and abandoned containers have become potential breeding grounds, increasing the risk of infection.

They have also urged citizens to keep their homes and surroundings clean, remove stagnant water, use mosquito nets and repellents, and wear protective clothing to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have intensified anti-mosquito drives by spraying insecticides, conducting awareness campaigns, and inspecting high-risk areas. However, many residents have complained that these measures are inadequate and have called for more effective mosquito control programmes and stricter monitoring.
Public health experts have emphasized that dengue prevention requires active cooperation between government authorities and citizens. They believe that regular cleaning of drains, proper waste disposal, community awareness, and continuous mosquito control activities are essential to controlling the outbreak.
